ProFishNC Charters Fishing Report for Wrightsville, Carolina & Topsail Beach June 7 – June 24th
The water is warming nicely and is between 78 and 80 degrees currently with the baitfish migration and fry development in full swing!
Inshore Fishing Report Topsail, Wrightsville & Carolina Beach:
The Fishing has been Great some days and just ok other days as we have had numerous pressure systems (including Tropical Storm Andrea) move through leaving us with a few days of “dirty water”. Nonetheless, we had some Great Days as well! We have boated up to 30 Flounder in a half day trip with the average being around 10 per ½ day Fishing Charter (though most were just under the legal “Keeper” length of 15 inches). We caught most of the Flatties drifting using finger mullet on a Carolina Rig and a circle hook. The finger mullet are now at that “catchable” size; however, many are smaller and about the size of a pinky finger. The Red Drum Bite has been hit or miss as well with the recent weather, many days we catch limits and on the days where we have a pressure change or heavy rain the bite slows a bit. They are feeding most days though and can be caught using live baits and jigs around the jetties, grasslines, inlets and backwaters.
Nearshore/ Offshore Fishing Report for Topsail, Carolina & Wrightsville Beach:
Similar to the Inshore Fishing, the Fishing has been Great some days and just okay other days as the rainwater washes out of the inlets and backwaters and into the ocean. The good thing is the “dirty water” has created Great Tide Lines to troll for Spanish Mackerel, King Mackerel and Bluefish. There have been some nice Cobia caught this week in the Baitballs right off the beaches along with a few King Mackerel. Further off the beach there have been some nice catches of Black Seabass, King Mackerel. Trolling Cigar Minnows on a BlueWater Candy Live Bait Rig had been doing the trick.
What to do when the weather systems move in and slow down the bite…
Fish Hard, move a lot and find “clean water”!!! When we have these heavy rains and pressure systems move in, the fishing always slows a bit and you must adjust your tactics to be successful. I cover a lot of water on a typical Fishing Charter; however, when the weather moves in, you must constantly cover ground to find the feeding fish. I prefer drifting the mouths of our inlets with live baits on the bottom with a Carolina Rig and 2ot Circle Hook to entice the flounder and drum bite as even with a pressure change or heavy rain, a live bait bouncing over the head of a fish is hard to resist!
