Hi Folks,

This is the first report for the spring of 2007. I hope everyone had a pleasant winter and also hope you like me are looking forward to an exciting spring fishing season. Water temps have risen to near 61 off the beach and in the lower to mid-sixties inshore. This is prior to the cold snap coming this weekend.

Now here’s my report:

Inshore: Some redfish and black drum are biting dead shrimp in the waterway and creeks. A few trout are biting artificials and live shrimp at the jetties and up the creeks. A rare small flounder might hit anything, but the big boys have not come in yet. Look for redfish and black drum action to pick very soon.

Near shore: Bluefish have shown up at the nearshore reefs along with some gray trout. These can be caught using jigging spoons. Bottom fishing nearshore is producing some ring tail porgies and sea bass. The bonito should show up any day and since I did not fish today probably did today! We shall soon see.

Offshore: The king mackerel are being caught at the 69 degree water mark. This can be from 30-40 miles out with Frying Pan Tower being a hot spot.

Gulfstream: Wahoo!!! Lots of big wahoo are being caught as well as some yellowfin tuna.

While the Gulfstream is really hot right now, the inshore and near shore fishing is just beginning to come around. Look for great fishing just around the corner.

More soon.

Let’s Go Fishing!!!

rod-man-with-red-and-trout-in-fl.jpgHi Folks,
Guys, and gals, don’t forget the date!!!
Well, we are half way through the boat show and fishing school season and that much closer to spring fishing. Water temperatures are in the low 50’s and that is good for this time of year. I am hoping for an early spring.
I was fortunate to spend 8 wonderful days fishing in Florida last month. We caught reds, trout, flounder, snook, pompano and ladyfish…all on GULP jerk baits and medium light tackle.
My wife and I met many nice new friends at the Greensboro and Raleigh Boat Shows. Last weekend, my Raleigh Fishing School was a big success. This weekend I will be going to the International Rodbuilders Expo in High Point; hopefully to get some new rod building ideas and plenty of rod building components.

My Wilmington Fishing School is set for March 3 and there are still plenty of seats open. Breakfast, lunch, door prizes and lots of fishing information…for details please visit: Wilmington Fishing School
I just put the Rod-Man back in the water. She has a new trolling motor this year, which will add new possibilities to your fishing. Some other nice changes have been made too. I hope to have a new pic up soon.
As to be expected, fishing is a bit slow right now. Some stripers are being caught in the Cape Fear River. Dogfish and black sea bass are biting on the nearshore reefs. Grouper are biting in the 20-40 mile range.
Spring fishing is just around the corner. Don’t miss out on my annual spring special. Check it out at: Spring Fishing Special
That’s all for now…but things will be heating up soon.Let’s Go Fishing!!!
